Blood Orange @ Baby's All Right 12/10/2015
As a warm-up for his two big benefit shows at The Apollo, Blood Orange played a full-band show on Thursday night (12/10) at Baby's All Right. It was the first full band show Dev Hynes has done in NYC in a year and a half. The show surprise-announced the show that morning, and tickets were only available at the door. Baby's was as packed as I've ever seen it and the crowd was singing along with most of the set. He and his band (about 10 strong, including sax, cello and backup singers) opened with new single "Sandra's Smile" and then hit with three crowd-pleasers -- "Chamakay," "You're Not Good Enough," and "Sutphin Boulevard." We got a couple new songs too, both of which sounded pretty good. Not too much in the way of special guest: Despot was brought out for "Clipped On" and a singer, who wasn't introduced (that I could hear) for one of the new numbers. Setlist is below.
Opening the night was Starchild & The New Romantic, who looked straight out of 1985, and opened their funky set with a cover of Terrence Trent D'Arby's "Wishing Well." Pictures from their set, below.
There are more guests expected at today's two benefit shows at the Apollo, including Ratking, Junglepussy, Le1f, Kindness, Dutch singer BAE , and others not announced. Dev said guests may differ between the two shows. We shall see.
UPDATE: Pitchfork points to an Instagram from Dev that says he's selling a surprise collaborative cassette with Nelly Furtado (who he played David Byrne's "Contemporary Color" shows with) at tonight's show and hints that she'll show up. (Furtado more than hints.) He writes:
SURPRISE!! I made a cassette with Nelly Furtado only available (for now) at the shows today! Maybe she's in town & we can play it live...
It's called Hadron Collider. Check out the artwork, with more pics from Blood Orange at Baby's All Right below...
