Brian Wilson Beacon

Brian Wilson played lots of rare songs with The Zombies at the Beacon (videos, setlists)

Brian Wilson and The Zombies just wrapped up their co-headlining “Something Great from ’68” tour at NYC’s Beacon Theatre last night (9/26), and the tour found The Zombies playing their beloved 1968 album Odessey and Oracle in full (plus other songs), while Brian focused on The Beach Boys’ underrated 1968 album Friends as well as their great 1971 album Surf’s Up.

The Zombies began their set with a few career-spanning songs, including the classics “Tell Her No” and “She’s Not There,” before playing Odessey and Oracle, and Brian’s set was full of surprises. He opened with some of The Beach Boys’ best early hits like “California Girls,” “I Get Around,” “Help Me, Rhonda,” and “Don’t Worry Baby,” and then he went on to pull not just from Friends and Surf’s Up, but also from other classics from the band’s late ’60s / early ’70s psychedelic era like Smile, Pet Sounds, Wild Honey, and Holland. He played some pretty rare cuts, many of which he hadn’t performed in years and some of which he hadn’t performed before this tour, like “Friends,” “Busy Doin’ Nothin’,” “Little Bird,” “Diamond Head,” “Passing By,” “‘Til I Die,” and “Lookin’ at Tomorrow (A Welfare Song).” He also played faves like “Good Vibrations,” “Heroes and Villains,” “Surf’s Up,” “Sail On, Sailor,” “God Only Knows,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Feel Flows,” and more.
