Bridget Everett is best known as a comedian, but she shows off her dramatic chops in Netflix’s powerful new series Unbelievable which debuted this past weekend on the streaming service. The series was co-created by Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich) and husband-and-wife novelists Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman, and based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning article “An Unbelievable Story of Rape,” written by T. Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong, and the This American Life radio episode, “Anatomy of Doubt”, and follows the hunt for a serial rapist.

Everett plays one of the foster parents of teenage victim Marie (Booksmart‘s Kaitlyn Dever) whose heartbreaking plight is one of the two main storylines the series follows. She’s terrific, as is the whole cast (which includes Toni Collette and Merritt Weaver as the two main detectives on the case), and you can expect to see more dramatic work from her as a result of this role. Unbelievable is sometimes harrowing, often heartbreaking, but not grim, and utterly compelling. You can watch the trailer below.

If you still like to see the more unexpurgated side of Bridget Everett, have no fear, she still performs standup as well has her musical-comedy revue with her band The Tender Moments. You can catch her and the band at NYC’s Joe’s Pub on October 25 & 26 (tickets for 10/25 are still available).
