Bright Eyes, Stephen Malkmus, Will Oldham & more playing Love Record Stores virual in-store
The Love Record Stores campaign launched back in March, to help emphasize the importance of supporting independent record stores amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Noting how the virus has put small businesses in jeopardy, the campaign's ultimate mission is to encourage fans to secure the "survival of this vital part of [the] industry," as Jason Rackham (of the PIAS group) noted, namely via online purchases and continued support.
With this mission in mind, Love Record Stores announced that they are hosting an event on Saturday, June 20th. Limited-edition special releases will be available to purchase via the online platforms of over 130 independent record stores involved the campaign. Since the pandemic has pushed Record Store Day back multiple times, ultimately settling on three different "drops" later this year (August 29, September 26, and October 24), this event is an alternative for people to purchase exclusive records and support a good cause.
The special releases will become available via each shop's respective online store at 4 AM EST (9 AM BST). Some of the participating stores include Banquet Records, Defend Vinyl, Elephant Records, Elsewhere, Left For Dead, Piccadilly Records, Sister Ray.
You can find the full list of the participating record stores (and a list of the respective releases they'll carry) here.
In addition to the special releases drop, June 20th will also include a 24-hour in-store livestream event with live performances, DJ sets, interviews, readings, and more from a wide variety of artists and music industry icons. Everything begins at 2 AM EST (7 AM BST) on the 20th through 2 AM EST on the 21st.
NME reports that some of the live sessions include a premiere of Yannis Philippakis (of Foals) performing Milk, Stephen Malkmus, Will Oldham, Brittany Howard, Fontaines D.C., Circa Waves, John Grant, Laura Marling, Phoebe Bridgers, Tim Burgess (who is also an ambassador of the event), Bright Eyes, Keaton Henson, Temples, I Break Horses, The Mystery Jets, Marika Hackman, and many more. Four Tet, Fat Boy Slim, Richard Russell, David Holmes, Total Refreshment Centre, Metronomy, Go! Team, and Light in the Attic Records are among those doing DJ sets, and a recording from the late Andrew Weatherall will be broadcast. Find the full line-up here.
Viewing is free of charge but donations are encouraged, with proceeds going to the #saveourvenues campaign. There will also be commissioned Record Label tees (available on the campaign's official site) and special buttons that will support the Black Lives Matter campaign and the COVID-19 relief fund.
