Broken Social Scene wrapped up their tour at Wellmont Theatre (pics, videos)
Broken Social Scene wrapped up their spring Hug of Thunder tour with two BrooklynVegan presented NYC area shows - Huntington, NY's The Paramount on Saturday (4/8) and Montclair, NJ's Wellmont Theater on Sunday (4/9). We went to the tour-closing Sunday night show at Wellmont; check out pictures in the gallery above (which include openers The Belle Game), and some video clips below.
Although band leader Kevin Drew admitted (with apparent relish) that the band had been "touring like teenagers," Broken Social Scene still had plenty of steam left to put on one of their typically expansive, epic shows to round out this latest tour. Switching seamlessly between instruments, with members coming on and offstage, the camaraderie BSS have developed from playing together over the years is obvious, and a big part of what make their shows so special. Sometimes members seem to get lost in the intricacies of their instruments, but then they'll come together to jam off each other or raise guitars or horns high in the air, or Brendan Canning will start jumping in place or give one of his trademark high kicks, and the energy in the room surges.
Broken Social Scene played many songs from their excellent 2017 album Hug of Thunder, one of our favorites from 2017, but they didn't neglect the rest of their discography either, playing fan favorites from You Forgot It In People, their 2005 self titled album, and Forgiveness Rock Record. Kevin hopped offstage to sing "Texico Bitches" with the crowd, and for an encore, members of The Belle Game joined vocalist Ariel Engle for a rendition of "Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl," then stayed onstage for the show-ending "Meet Me in the Basement."
