Jaki Liebezeit, drummer of krautrock legends Can, has passed away at age 78. The band posted a statement to their Facebook page:

It is with great sadness we have to announce that Jaki passed away this morning from sudden pneumonia. He fell asleep peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones. We will miss him hugely.

Jaki was a founding member of the band, and was with them from 1968 though their 1979 breakup, as well as at their various reunions.

Before Can, he was a member of Manfred Schoof's European free jazz quintet, and he's contributed to albums by Brian Eno, Depeche Mode, Eurythmics, Michael Rother (of Neu!), and more. Most recently, he teamed back up with his Can bandmate Irmin Schmidt (plus Jono Podmore and Burnt Friedman) to release a self-titled EP as Cyclopean on Mute in 2013.

Rest in peace Jaki. You'll be missed and your influence on music will not be forgotten.
