Caravels going on hiatus, releasing a split w/ Octaves (listen)

by Andrew Sacher

Caravels

Nevada screamo band Caravels were one of the more promising newer bands on the scene, and their 2013 debut LP Lacuna on Topshelf was one of this genre’s relatively overlooked gems of the past few years. But unfortunately, they’ll be going on hiatus. They posted the following back in December:

Hey everyone, on January 9th, Caravels will be playing at the Bunkhouse with friends, Same Sex Mary, and Alaska. We’ll be heading out to Europe for a tour on January 13th. Because of personal circumstances in our lives, after we come back from Europe, Caravels will go on hiatus. This will be our last Las Vegas show in the foreseeable future. We’ve been at this for close to nine years now and it has been a pleasure to participate in the local music scene and call Vegas our home. Come out to the show if you’d like to help send us off on our final tour and celebrate the end of what has been an incredible experience. Thank you.

On the bright side, before they go out, they’ll put out one more release: a split with Baltimore hardcore band Octaves, who are on tour with them in Europe. That comes out next week (1/27) via Topshelf/Bridge 9 (click the label links to pre-order), and we’ve got a premiere of the full stream in this post. Caravels’ half picks up where their LP left off, combining atmospheric post-rock, inventive riffs, and raw-throated shouts. Octaves’ side is a bit more aggressive, but they’ve got a sense of experimentation too (like the circus waltz of “Tom Petty Cash”).
