Caroline Says, the project of Austin's Caroline Sallee, has announced a new EP, Ohio River, due November 22 via Western Vinyl, and shared the title track. Caroline says the song was inspired by both Bruce Springsteen and Steely Dan, though you wouldn't necessarily know it from listening. With its glistening, slowcore-ish atmosphere and Caroline's smoky vocals, it's closer to something like Mazzy Star. And it's great stuff. Here's what she says:

This song is about growing up in a small southern town, having fun as a teenager while you’re there, moving away, and then visiting it later in life as a different person with a different perspective, but having fond memories of it there. I guess a common theme for me… also very Bruce Springsteen. They’re watching a river to distract themselves from a sad thing.

I had “Dirty Work” by Steely Dan in my head for this, although it sounds nothing like it. I used the Wurlitzer in the second verse because of it.

As mentioned, she's opening Hovvy's tour, including the Brooklyn show on October 29 at Rough Trade NYC, which also has Kevin Krauter on the bill (tickets). All dates are listed below.

1. Falling Knife
2. Ohio River
3. Smoke and Mirrors
4. Year of the Cicada
