Montreal's awesome Chocolat are definitely "psych" and sometimes "garage" and they definitely "rock" but yet defy easy pigeonholing. The band's new album, Rencontrer Looloo, skitters from lithe, jazzy baroque to first-pumping riff rock, strutting boogie, harmony-laden spacerock, and spooky synth workouts that could fit on the Stranger Things soundtrack. (Sometimes this is all in one song.) What binds all this together is Chocolat's superior musicianship and a real joie de rock.

Even the band have trouble describing what they do. "Imagine early Roxy Music doing a modal jazz exercise on crack" is the way guitarist/producer Emmanuel Ethier describes the new album's first released cut, "Les Pyramides." That premieres in this post and you can stream it below.

Rencontrer Looloo will be out November 11 via Beyond Beyond is Beyond / Dare to Care / Teenage Menopause Records. Chocolat will be touring this fall, with Canadian dates announced now. Those are listed, along with album art and tracklist, below.
