CMJ 2010 – Bill’s Friday DAYTIME picks (a BV party, Shrag, Magic Bullets, Ty Segall, Phantom Band & more)
by Bill Pearis
I think CMJ really blew it's wad last night with so many conflicting great shows I was almost paralyzed by the choices. Almost. Not quite as many tough decisions tonight, but the day shows are plentiful and good. Skip work, rock out.
Obviously we want all of you to come to the BV day party at Public Assembly. Bands start at noon, with Jonny Corndawg kicking things off and then San Francisco's Magic Bullets (who I saw Wed. night at Bruar Falls, so much fun) at 12:30. Get there early for free food, drinks and Earpeace earplugs. So many great acts today: Ty Segall, Scotland's The Phantom Band (super-psyched to see them for the first time), Montreal's Luyas, Lower Dens, the just added UK snarling indiepop band Shrag (one of my personal must-sees this week), the just revealed Devotchka, John Vanderslice, Asobi Seksu, etc etc etc. Going to be awesome. FREE. 21+.
Magic Bullets play again at Bruar Falls (5:15PM) for a day party courtesy KXSC and the L.A. Record. Also playing: LA band Superhumanoids (who someone just told me were excellent the other night), superloud duo No Joy (who play our Saturday party), Knoxville, TN's COOLRUNNINGS, White Arrows and more. FREE.
Staying in Williamsburg, the Impose party at The Woods has spooky folk band Dark Dark Dark (who played Cake Shop earlier this week), Eternal Summers, a Cassie Ramone doing a solo set, MillionYoung, Bird Names and Dustin Wong. FREE, bands start at 1PM.
Meanwhile, over at Ludlow St: Pop Tarts Suck Toasted has put together an admittedly kick-ass bill at Cake Shop. (His first of two!) Shrag play their second show of the day at 6PM, and Rooftop Vigilantes (2:15PM, awesome sloppy, anthemic indie rock) are both especially highly reccomended by me. But also: Pepper Rabbit, Your Youth, Slow Animal, Yellow ostrich. All set times are on the flyer at the bottom of this post. FREE, bands start at noon.
And at Fontana's, there's Devotchka, The Mynabirds, Generationals (highly underrated pop), Dan Mangan, Deluka and Field Days. FREE.
And today's line-up for Pitchfork's #Offline Fest includes Glasser, Deradoorian, Marnie Stern, Zola Jesus, Candy Claws, and more. Bands start at 2PM (Big Troubles, definitely worth showing up early for). $10 and 21+.
Glasser and Devotchka, and Colin Meloy, also play at the Ace Hotel today for KEXP.
Fader Fort's kind of a bust this year, no?
