Colin Quinn playing free show tonight in Brooklyn ++ ‘The Kevin Corrigan Show’ & more free NYC comedy
2015 is finally here. As the least productive member of the BV team, I want to start off this new year right by throwing a few awesome funny-related events onto your stupid radars. The first event of note is Colin Quinn: Breuklyn which is taking place tonight (1/5) at Over the Eight in Williamsburg (594 Union Ave, near McCarren Park and a bunch of horrendous condos). "Breuklyn" is the Park Slope-born comedy veteran's new one-man show about, well, Brooklyn. This intimate event is basically a dry run before Colin does a big ass taping of it for the television. Colin is a powerhouse veteran and pro, and the irony that this show is taking place in the now nearly completely culturally destitute corporate village of Williamsburg certainly isn't lost on yours truly. Doors are at 7:30 PM, show is at 8 PM, and it is totally free.
After Colin leaves us breathless and sore from the gales of laughter we've showered him with, stick around because there's another sweet event happening in that very same room immediately after! Famous Hollywood actor Kevin Corrigan and maybe-less-famous-but-still-very-prolific actor, producer, writer, and director Larry Fessenden will do a live reading of the classic Scharpling and Wurster bit THE GORCH. You can hear the original Gorch bit below, but for the uninitiated, the gist is that a man called The Gorch was the basis for the character The Fonz in Happy Days (and is bitter about it) and Tom has the honor of interviewing him on the phone. It's just a great, classic bit. I have NO CLUE WHY they are doing this, but I am not questioning it because it's gonna be awesome. This event is free.
The above mention of Kevin Corrigan and Tom Scharpling is the perfect segue into the next dope comedy type event happening this week that I wanted to mention. The Kevin Corrigan Show (which used to happen at Over the Eight) returns on Thursday (1/8) at 9:30 PM at Brit Pack (153 Lafayette Street, Manhattan) with yet another pants-shittingly awesome line-up. This talk-show styled free show will welcome, as mentioned, comedy legend Patton Oswalt, fellow comedic genius and king of broadcasting Tom Scharpling, as well as punk icon Kathleen Hanna (!) who was the subject of the great documentary The Punk Singer. Again it's free and with this lineup, get there early.
Patton has some other NYC appearances this week, and a new book too. Flyers for some of the shows mentioned in this post, plus "The Gorch" stream, below...
