Ex Eye

Colin Stetson, Greg Fox, Shahzad Ismaily & Toby Summerfield formed metal band Ex Eye, playing Saint Vitus

Saxophonist and musical polymath Colin Stetson has a new project on his resume, the metal band Ex Eye. He’s rounded up Liturgy/Zs drummer extraordinaire Greg Fox, guitarist Toby Summerfield and bassist/synth man (and Doveman collaborator) Shahzad Ismaily to play perhaps the heaviest stuff that Colin has ever put his name to.

While they haven’t released any official recorded music, they have played live, including fests like Roskilde and Eaux Claires. There are enough live videos and rehearsal excerpts floating around to get a sense of what this is, perhaps exactly what you’d think, which is still really cool; arty, frenetic heavy metal (with more black metal inclinations than anything, although it’s not so easy to pin to a genre) that makes heavy use of saxophone. Definitely worth checking out.

Ex Eye will next play at Brooklyn’s Saint Vitus on November 20. Tickets for that are on sale now. Listen to some of those rehearsal excerpts and check out a live video from Roskilde below.

Meanwhile, Colin Stetson will play with his frequent collaborator Sarah Neufeld on Thursday, October 13 at NYC’s Winter Garden at Brookfield Place, part of NYC’s New Sounds Live series. The show’s at 7:30 PM and is free.
