Common Holly Black Lightning

Common Holly announces new album on Barsuk, shares "Central Booking"

We named Montreal’s Common Holly one of the best new artists of 2017 off the strength of her debut album Playing House, so we are excited to learn she has finally announced a followup. It’s called When I say to you Black Lightning and it’s due October 11 via Barsuk/Solitaire (pre-order). Main member Brigitte Naggar made the album with Devon Bate and Hamish Mitchell, and she says:

This record isn’t one singular statement, it documents a period of growth. The songs were written mainly over two years and they all reflect potent moments from that time. While it’s obviously personal and based off of my own experience, I want this album to feel familiar— life gets complicated as we grow, people form relationships to each other, they lose things, they discover pain, fear, self-delusion; sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s weird, often it sucks—and we have to navigate our way through all of that.

The first single is “Central Booking,” which is a gorgeous dose of atmospheric art pop with a freeform, experimental edge. Fans of Julia Holter should check this one out, and you can do so by watching its video (directed by Max Taeuschel & Aaliyeh Afshar) below.

Common Holly also has upcoming tour dates, including NYC’s Trans-Pecos on August 2 with Mauno. All dates are listed below.
