Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile played Loew's Theatre (review, pics, setlist)
Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile brought their strong chemistry and mutual guitar talents to the beautiful Landmark Loew’s Theatre in Jersey City, NJ on Monday (11/7), in support of their collaborative LP Lotta Sea Lice. Courtney and Kurt were accompanied onstage by their terrific backing band The Sea Lice, and wasted little time with stage banter, giving the packed crowd a string of tracks off the new album, including reworked versions of each other’s material and some covers.
Courtney and Kurt’s setlist was pretty much identical to many previous stops on the tour, like the Beacon Theatre show. The two sounded pretty great while performing each other’s solo tracks. Kurt’s breezy soloing over Courtney’s “Depreston” gave the already-stellar track a completely new edge, while the two trading verses on “Life Like This” made the track sound surprisingly ideal in a duet arrangement. Courtney and Kurt ended the night with a three-song encore, beginning with a stunning cover of Gillian Welch’s “Elvis Presley Blues,” before closing with Kurt’s “Pretty Pimpin” and Courtney’s “Avant Gardner,” respectively.
Singer-songwriter Jen Cloher, who Kurt and Courtney cover on their album and covered last night, served as the opener for the show. She performed many songs off her self-titled record, released back in August. She entertained the crowd with stories of her childhood idolizing Jim Morrison and her addiction to Galaga, before playing many passionately-performed songs, such as “David Bowie Eyes” and “Strong Woman.” She also encouraged fans in the audience to go see her again at Rough Trade NYC on January 30 (tickets).
