Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile played a collaborative Beacon Theatre show (pics)
Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile's tour in support of their new collaborative album for Matador, Lotta Sea Lice, hit NYC's Beacon Theatre on Wednesday (11/1). Backed by an all-star backing band, The Sea Lice, Courtney and Kurt played the album's combination of original material, covers of each other's work, and other covers, including one of opener Jen Cloher's songs, "Fear Is Like a Forest." They also did a cover of Gillian Welch's "Elvis Presley Blues" which isn't on the album, and some of their own songs. Watching them onstage together, it's clear how well they go together even visually with their complementary shaggy hair and skinny jeans, both wielding guitars. They sound great together too: "Depreston" has never sounded better than with Kurt's voice chiming in on the choruses, and Courtney's voice added dimension to Kurt tracks like "Pretty Pimpin."
The set list, which you can see below, hasn't changed much during the tour -- Courtney and Kurt played the same songs in NYC as they did when they played Rockefeller Chapel in Chicago. The backing band has changed slightly, with Warpaint's Stella Mozgawa on drums at Beacon Theatre, a roll that Sleater-Kinney's Janet Weiss has also filled. See pictures from Wednesday night's show in the gallery above, and a couple of videos, including one of the Gillian Welch cover, below.
If you missed the sold out NYC show, Courtney and Kurt will be back in the area for a Jersey City show at Loews Jersey Theatre on November 6. Tickets are on sale, and you can try to win a pair at the BrooklynVegan Facebook.
Jen Cloher also plays her own NYC show on January 30 at Rough Trade (tickets).
