Wilco's biennial Solid Sound Festival kicked off Friday (6/28) at MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA, with a short day whose clear MVP was Courtney Barnett. In addition to playing her scheduled Joe's Field set, she did an intimate solo pop-up set earlier in the afternoon in one of the galleries of Building 5, and she came out during Wilco's karaoke set later in the evening, introduced by Jeff Tweedy as "Courtney from Melbourne," to perform a thrilling rendition of "Handshake Drugs" with the band. Watch that happen below.

The karaoke set, in addition to featuring 10 contest winners fronting Wilco for songs like "Nothing’severgonnastandinmyway(again)," "Heavy Metal Drummer," and "Poor Places," also included appearances from Yuka Honda on “We Aren’t the World (Safety Girl)," and Jeff's son and sometimes-bandmate Sammy Tweedy on "I'm Always in Love."

Day one of Solid Sound also had sets from Lithics, Expandards, Rafiq Bhatia, DJ Funkhouser, and more. Check out pictures in the gallery above and a couple of fan-taken video clips below, and stay tuned for the rest of our Solid Sound coverage.
