Covet

Covet releasing LP on Triple Crown (stream "glimmer")

Covet is the instrumental rock trio of three virtuosos — guitarist Yvette Young, bassist David Adamiak, and drummer Forrest Rice — and while their music is complex, it isn’t just complexity for complexity’s sake. They’re really creative songwriters, and all the busy playing is backed up by some real sugar-sweet melodies. They signed to Triple Crown earlier this year, and they’ll release their first album for the label, effloresce, on July 13 (pre-order). They recently released lead single “shibuya,” which features electronic musician San Holo, and we’re now premiering another track, “glimmer.”

Yvette tells us, “This song originally started as a more gentle, acoustic piece I wrote and when I played it with the full band, it evolved into a moodier and heavier song. We added a bunch of delay and modulation to it, as well as some grit, and all of a sudden it transformed into the ‘Glimmer’ we have on the album!” It’s math rock of the Don Caballero variety, but it really ebbs and flows like post-rock, and has all the beauty and atmosphere of a band like, say, Caspian (who Covet just opened for in NYC earlier this month). It’s dizzying, gorgeous stuff, and you can hear it for yourself below.

The band also has some West Coast dates coming up, including shows with the likeminded Vasudeva and others with Oakland post rockers Wander. Those are listed, alongside the album tracklist, below. That’s the album artwork (a painting done by Yvette) above.
