Cumulus, the Seattle indie band led by Alexandra Niedzialkowski, followed their 2013 debut album I Never Meant It To Be Like This with the non-album single “Retreat” last month, and now they finally announced a sophomore album, Comfort World. The first taste of the new LP is the title track, which is a gorgeous dose of atmospheric indie pop with folky tendencies, electronic tendencies, and more, and an instantly-catchy refrain of “stoned and alone.” Alexandra says that she wrote the song after ending a long-term relationship and learning the news of her mother’s cancer diagnosis, and that: “I wrote the song to process my confusion. I had to mourn the loss of a previous version of myself and the way I thought life would be.” It sounds like a big step up from Cumulus’ debut, and it’s the kind of song that should appeal to fans of other tender indie stuff like Death Cab or Rilo Kiley.

Speaking of, Cumulus are actually signed to Trans- Records, the label run by former Death Cab member Chris Walla, and they made this album at Wall’s Hall of Justice studio with Walla’s former intern Mike Davis producing. The album drops on September 28. Check out the new song, artwork, and tracklist below.

Cumulus also announced a tour, including a lengthy run opening for Bad Bad Hats and some headlining shows. One of their headlining shows is at Brooklyn’s Elsewhere (Zone One) on September 19. Tickets for that show are on sale now. All dates are listed below.
