Cochemea All My Relations

Daptone jazz artist Cochemea releasing a new LP (stream "Mitote" ft. Sunny Jain)

Cochemea Gastelum was a longtime saxphonist in Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, and he’s also worked with Paul Simon, Amy Winehouse, David Byrne, St. Vincent, The Roots, Beck, and many others, and he was a soloist in Broadway’s Fela! production. He also makes spiritual jazz on his own, simply as Cochemea, and he’ll be releasing his new solo album All My Relations on February 22 via Daptone (pre-order).

We’re premiering the song “Mitote,” named for the ancient Aztec dance, and the song features Red Baraat leader Sunny Jain on the Dhol, along with Daptone’s Gabe Roth and a selection of drummers who helped arrange the song. “The melody plays like a blues almost. Mitote is an ancient Aztec dance and has also been associated with Peyote ritual. These images and visions are what come to me when I hear it,” Cochemea says. It’s definitely the kind of jazz song you can dance to, and Cochemea really makes his saxophone sing. Listen below.
