You may know Dave Depper from the current lineup of Death Cab for Cutie (he plays guitar and keyboards), and over the course of his career he’s also played with Menomena, Fruit Bats, Mirah, Corin Tucker, Laura Gibson, and Ray LaMontagne to name a few. He makes music himself, too, and will release his debut solo album, Emotional Freedom Technique, on June 9 via Tender Loving Empire. “Throughout my career, though I’d played with so many different people, I constantly struggled to find a style of writing and voice that seemed authentically my own,” says Dave. “Suddenly, and almost by accident, it found me.”
We’ve got the premiere of “Your Voice on the Radio” which is a duet with Laura Gibson. “It’s the only track on the record I wrote with a specific thematic goal in mind, which was to pay tribute to those classic, slightly cheesy boy/girl duets of yesteryear,” says Dave, citing “Don’t You Want Me” and “Islands in the Stream” as examples. “The song finds our protagonist daydreaming that the girl he hears on the radio is secretly dreaming right back at him, so I figured it appropriate to draft my favorite female singer, Laura Gibson, as my duet partner. Sonically, I attempted to answer the question, ‘what if David Bowie’s backing band on Sound and Vision cut a straight-up disco track while the boss was out on a smoke break?'” Check out “Your Voice on the Radio” below.
Dave’s got a couple Pacific Northwest solo shows coming up before more shows with Death Cab. Those solo dates are listed, along with the album art and tracklist, below.
