David Lynch has not ruled out more 'Twin Peaks'; Season 3 on Blu-ray in December

Twin Peaks: The Return aired its finale two weeks ago and, no real surprise, raised as many questions as it answered. The final 40 minutes or so worked as a perfect, very Lynchian ending for me, though I have friends who were exasperated by the long driving scenes’ lack of closure on certain key characters. The ending did leave the possibility for more, and Lynch revealed he’s not against returning to Twin Peaks. Though it might be a while.

As reported in Welcome to Twin Peaks, Lynch took part in a public Skype session as part of his “Small Stories” photo exhibition, which is on display at the Belgrade Culture Centre in Serbia. Lynch said it was too early to say whether there’d be a fourth season or not, adding “It took me four and a half years to write and film this season.”

When asked about some of the unanswered questions raised in the last few episodes of The Return, specifically the fate of one character, he said, “What matters is what you believe happened. That’s the whole thing. There are lots of things in life, and we wonder about them, and we have to come to our own conclusions. You can, for example, read a book that raises a series of questions, and you want to talk to the author, but he died a hundred years ago. That’s why everything is up to you.” Watch video clips from the Skype session below.

Perhaps Lynch will speak further on the subject during his talk at his Festival of Disruption next month in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, you can do your own detective work and pour over every frame of Twin Peaks: The Return when it comes to Blu-ray and DVD on December 5. They’re calling it the “Third Season” — which may be just marketing but also makes it seem like there could be more. No word on what kind of extras there might be but that’s the box set art, featuring Agent Cooper and Mr C, above.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, meanwhile, is getting a Criterion Collection edition on October 17. It comes with “The Missing Pieces” (aka 90 minutes of deleted scenes, some of which made their way into The Return) and an interview feature with Lynch and the Palmer family (Ray Wise, Grace Zabriskie, Sheryl Lee) around the dinner table — both of which are on the Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery box set. There are also new interviews with Lee and composer Angelo Badalamenti. Criterion is also releasing terrific documentary David Lynch: The Art of Life on September 26, though you can watch it right now for free with Amazon Prime.
