De La Noche (mems The Rosebuds) prep debut -- listen to "Avenues"

De La Noche is a long-distance trio fronted by Ivan Howard of The Rosebuds, Gayngs and (his soul alter-ego) Howard Ivans, plus longtime friends Robert Rogan and Brian Weeks. They’ve known each other since college, and Weeks played live in The Rosebuds, but they reconnected last year; Brian and Robert had recorded an album’s worth of ’80s-inspired songs but wondered if Ivan, who had just moved across the country to Portland, might want to sing on them. De La Noche was born, Postal Service-style. The songs have a sultry, soulful style to them, part Roxy Music, part Prefab Sprout and The Blue Nile, which Ivan’s voice is perfect for (you may remember The Rosebuds covered Sade’s Love Deluxe in full). “I tried to let the music dictate the sentiment of each song and just created a character that could fill all these melodic parts,” says Ivan.

De La Noche’s self-titled debut will be out August 23 via Get Loud Recordings and we’ve got the premiere of the first single “Avenues.” “After the end of a long-term relationship, I found myself walking down the same downtown streets we used to walk together, but now I was walking them alone with no one to see and nowhere to go,” says Robert of the song. “I thought of a passage from a T.S. Eliot poem: ‘Shall I say, I have gone at dusk through narrow streets/And watched the smoke that rises from the pipes/Of lonely men in shirt-sleeves, leaning out of windows? …/I should have been a pair of ragged claws/Scuttling across the floors of silent seas.’ That’s how I felt at the time, and that’s how Avenues came to be.” Ivan’s vocals really nail that romantic loneliness, and the smooth sax just seals the deal.
