Die Antwoord accuse 'Suicide Squad' of ripping them off

by Kristian Brito

Cape Town’s inimitable rap eccentrics Die Antwoord have accused Suicide Squad director David Ayer of trying to do just that in his new superhero blockbuster. An Instagram post (see below) by the group’s Yolandi accuses Ayer of “jocking” the group’s visual style, and features a fairly convincing video comparing stills of the film’s Joker (played by Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) with DA’s own signature looks. According to Yolandi, Ayer reached out to the crew and discussed them on set before proceeding to “nibbel” from their work without permission:

“yes David Ayer u jockin our style. callin [DA member] ninja up before your movie came our pretendin 2b down, so it looks OK when u bite our black & white graf style & our opening sequence to umshiniwam & an all da lil tiny details u nibbeld dat other people wont see but we notice. Cara [Delevingne, who plays the film’s villain] & Jared told us how much u were talkin abt us on set but u never asked our permision to rip us off.”

The caption also claims that Ninja unsuccessfully attempted to contact Ayer to discuss the issue, and calls the film a “bullshit movie.” It even manages to sneak in a dig at Kanye West (who allegedly had a weird run-in with DA recently), suggesting that Ayer and West form an “i’m a fake fuck” crew. Die Antwoord are currently touring, and are gearing up for a string of North American dates this Fall. See their schedule below.

Suicide Squad recently released its official soundtrack, which featured a new track by Grimes, and paired up Leto’s Joker-in-question with Rick Ross and Skrillex for the OST’s ridiculous “Purple Lamborghini” video. Check that out below along with the OST tracklist, and weigh Die Antwoord’s grievances for yourself.
