Drake revealed on stage at the 2017 edition of his OVO Fest that he was working on a new album, the followup to his 2017 album (I mean "playlist"), More Life. Still no word on that, but Drake did drop a new two-song EP this month, Scary Hours, featuring the R&B-minded "God's Plan" and the harder edged rap of "Diplomatic Immunity." Both tracks have production by Boi-1da, with additional production from Cardo, 40 and Yung Exclusive on "God's Plan" and production from Brongers on "Diplomatic Immunity." In unsurprising news, the EP quickly rose up the charts and helped him set another new record. "God's Plan" debuted at No. 1 and "Diplomatic Immunity" also cracked the top 10, giving him a total of 22 top 10 singles to date and passing Jay-Z as the rapper with the most top 10s in Billboard Hot 100 history. In case you somehow still haven't heard the songs, you can listen to both below.
More Drake is coming soon too. Just after releasing the new EP, he posted that he was back in the studio, and it looks like Drake's long-rumored Trippie Redd collaboration is finally coming together too.
In related news, Drake collaborator and OVO signee Roy Woods has announced a tour in support of his debut album, Say Less, which came out in December (and features Partynextdoor, dvsn, and PnB Rock). His tour includes a NYC show on May 1 at Irving Plaza. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (2/2) at 10 AM with various presales starting beforehand. All dates are listed on the tour poster above.
Also, "God's Plan" is the first No. 1 record for producer Cardo, who's been on fire lately, with credits on Kendrick Lamar's DAMN., Migos' Culture and the just-released Culture II (which Drake is also on), and the excellent new Payroll Giovanni & Cardo album that came out the same day as Culture II. He talked to CItyPages about it:
I kinda feel like a newcomer, but I also feel like I’m … I don’t wanna say an “O.G.” in the game, ‘cause I ain’t been in the game that damn long. I feel like I was an underdog. It’s all new to me: [“God’s Plan”] is my first No. 1 record that I ever had in my entire career, and I had a lot of records, but as far as a No. 1 overall, I ain’t never had that. Ever. I had top 100 records, but not No. 1. So it’s all new. It’s just refreshing, and it’s also inspiring, ‘cause it’s like, “OK, I’m doing everything in the right way. Let me just keep doing it so I can get my bro Pay on that same level, if not bigger and better.
