Drawing Boards releasing 'The Message' (stream it), playing show with A. Savage

Drawing Boards, the NYC-based band that features ex members of Dirty on Purpose, Sisters, TEEN and Darlings, will release The Message this Friday (6/7) via Gentle Reminder Records). While the band released a self-titled tape last year, The Message is the band’s proper debut, recorded at Sonelab Studios in Easthampton, MA with Justin Pizzoferrato (J Mascis, Speedy Ortiz, Sonic Youth, Parquet Courts). Drawing Boards began as a recording project between Aaron Pfannebecker and Doug Marvin, but grew to include Jane Herships and Peter Rynsky, and became even more of a collaborative project

All four contribute to the songwriting and bring different influences, but this is a cohesive-sounding album: dreamy indie rock that is equally adept with heavenly harmonies as burst of noise. Hership’s increased vocal presence on these songs really elevates things as well. “These songs are about living in a city full of noise and needing an escape from it,” says Pfannebecker, “finding that escape in love, losing that love and retreating. Then healing/unhealing and starting all over again.” If you’re a fan of classic ’90s indie rock and shoegaze — be it Pavement, Dinosaur Jr, My Bloody Valentine, Yo La Tengo and even Britpop like Blur — the very catchy songs on The Message should appeal. We’re premiering a stream of the album in this post and you can listen below.

The band will celebrate the release of The Message at Baby’s All Right on Wednesday (6/5) with A. Savage (Parquet Courts) and Blush also on the bill (tickets).
