Drowse & Elizabeth Colour Wheel singer share collab, playing NYC together

Slowcore/shoegaze artist Drowse (aka Kyle Bates) and the insanely talented Elizabeth Colour Wheel singer Lane Shi Otayonii have teamed up for two new collaborations, “Sudo Beast” and “Open, Alone,” which will make up side A of an upcoming Drowse mini-LP, Second Self, due September 20 via The Flenser. (Side B features two new Drowse songs.) The first song to be released is the 11-and-a-half minute “Sudo Beast,” which is a gripping trek through darkness and noisy ambience that really earns its lengthy running time. Lane Shi based her lyrics to the song on a dream she had, and she says:

The frustration of communication is a beast, sometimes you slay the beast, other times the beast slays you, in between the communication and frustration it is the footsteps of the clicking clock, otherwise silence. If there’s a space land I can go to, it would be the trace to find the coffin of this beast, lay down right next to it, and wait for no one to come find me.

Drowse, who also released the album Light Mirror in June, is also touring with his Flenser labelmate Planning For Burial, ending with a NYC show at Brooklyn Bazaar Basement on September 3, and Lane Shi will open that show with a set under the moniker otay:onii (tickets). Maybe she and Drowse will use the opportunity to collab on stage?

Lane Shi also has a performance in NYC this Friday (8/23) at 325 Canal. More info here. Elizabeth Colour Wheel put out their very solid debut album earlier this year.
