Echo & The Bunnymen and Violent Femmes played Coney Island (pics, setlists, video)

It was a double-dose of ’80s alt-rock Wednesday night (7/12) as Violent Femmes and Echo & The Bunnymen‘s tour played Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk. Both groups came armed with hits, and Violent Femmes came armed with Amanda Palmer (whose Dresden Dolls bandmate Brian Viglione was a Violent Femme for a few years) who joined the band for “Kiss Off,” taking full control during the song’s countdown section. You can watch video of that below. The Femmes’ set also included “Add it Up,” “Gone Daddy Gone” (Amanda joined them again), “American Music,” “Blister in the Sun,” “Waiting for the Bus” and more.

If you ever wanted to hear Echo & The Bunnymen play “Seven Seas” by the seaside, they did just that last night (though no “Ocean Rain”), plus “The Killing Moon,” “Bedbugs & Ballyhoo,” “Never Stop,” “Rescue,” “Over the Wall,” “The Cutter,” and lots more. Fun fact: the current live lineup of the band includes Kelley Stoltz, who has had records on Sub Pop, Third Man, and Castle Face, and used to have a Bunnymen cover band that included Spiral Stairs of Pavement and Shayde Sartin of The Fresh & Onlys.

Violent Femmes and The Bunnymen play Asbury Park’s Stone Pony Summer Stage on Friday (7/14) and tickets are available. Setlists and videos for both bands’ Coney Island sets are below, and pictures from the night are in the gallery above.
