Electric Forest expanded to two weekends for its 2017 edition, bringing a total of eight days of EDM (and more) to Rothbury, Michigan’s Sherwood Forest (6/22-6/25 & 6/29-7/2) The String Cheese Incident (playing two shows) and Bassnectar headlined both weekends, but Weekend 1 was also headlined by My Morning Jacket, Odesza, and Above & Beyond, while Weekend 2 had Flume and DJ Snake. The lineup also included Kamasi Washington, A-Track, Francis and the Lights, Khruangbin, Matisyahu, Vince Staples, Waka Flocka Flame, Xenia Rubinos, Thievery Corporation, Cashmere Cat, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and others. Pictures from Weekend 2 are in the gallery above.

Jambase describes the magic in the woods of Rothbury:

Unique creative spaces are a theme at Electric Forest. Deep in the forest section of the festival a Grand Artique stage creates a rustic space for a trading post where trinkets are exchanged, tarot reading are given and a cast of characters in rustic American hang around and entertain on stage. For those festival attendees with a sense of adventure a set of secret rooms were contained in The Hanger stage amongst other amenities such as a barber shop, billiards, bowling, photo studio and much more. Access to the secret rooms was gained by a variety of means including riddles, puzzles and games which kept a steady steam of gossip among attendees about the secrets and clues.

Of course, Electric Forest had its share of un-magical, mundane festival issues, like a rash of stolen cellphones (also a problem at Coachella) and the weather. Weekend 1 was soggy and muddy with over four inches of rain falling on the grounds in two days. Weekend 2 early arrivals found rain as well, according to Muskegon News, which, along with thunderstorms and lightning, led to closed festival and campground gates, and a backup of cars.
