Ella Mai follows breakout R&B hit “Boo’d Up” with “Trip,” on tour now
UK singer Ella Mai signed to DJ Mustard's 10 Summers label in 2016, and she has since released three EPs for the label, the latest being her early 2017 EP Ready. That one's home to "Boo'd Up," which took a minute to catch on, but has since become one of the biggest R&B songs around in the U.S. (It's bigger here than in her home country, possibly because of learning American slang during her time living in New York or her formative American influences like Lauryn Hill.) Even if you don't recognize it by name, you've probably heard it somewhere (as I'm writing this, the video which came out this past April has over 180 million views, and the remix with Nicki Minaj and Quavo has over 5 million) and it probably already drilled its way into your brain. It's super catchy, and it's not hard to tell why it's been taking off. DJ Mustard strays from his trademark bounce for a more laid-back, '90s R&B vibe, and Ella's cooing vocals are the perfect fit. Since becoming a star, she followed "Boo'd Up" with a new single, "Trip," earlier this month, and it instantly proves that she's got more up her sleeve. This one's even more laid back, and though Ella's delivery is subdued, her hooks feel massive. Listen to "Trip," watch the "Boo'd Up" video, and stream the "Boo'd Up" remix below.
Ella is currently on "Boo'd Up The Tour," which includes a Brooklyn show at Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight (8/13), which is unsurprisingly sold out. The tour continues through the end of August, and in September, Ella plays Vancouver's Westward Music Festival with Blood Orange, SOPHIE, Kali Uchis, Rhye, Angel Olsen, Kelela, Saba, Ravyn Lenae, and more.
