Fishbone & more playing ‘Hendrix in Harlem’ celebration at The Apollo; unreleased Hendrix live LP out this week
Jimi Hendrix and Harlem's The Apollo go back a long way. He won Amateur Night in 1964, and made additional appearances at the Apollo as guitarist for such acts as The Isley Brothers, The Animals, Wilson Picket and more before achieving fame on his own. 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and on November 26, The Apollo will host the "Hendrix in Harlem" celebration featuring ska/funk/punk/soul/etc band Fishbone (who recently played at Afropunk 2016) with special guests Ernie Isley, Nona Hendryx, and Liv Warfield. There will be both a 7 PM and an 11 PM performance, and tickets are on sale now.
In other Hendrix related news, recordings from his debut performance with the "Band of Gypsys" (Billy Cox on bass andBuddy Miles on drums) at the Fillmore East (December 31, 1969) are getting a proper release. A second performance from that night became the material for the 1970 live album Band of Gypsys, but you'll now be able to hear the first, officially, as Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show 12/31/69 which is out Friday, September 30. Listen to "Ezy Ryder" from it below:
