We’re still a little over a month out from the release of Fleet Foxes’ highly anticipated third album, Crack-Up. So far the band has shared the sprawling, nine-minute prog-folk journey “Third of May / Ōdaigahara,” and a short teaser video. It looks like we can expect to hear another song from Crack Up soon, though. Robin Pecknold said in instagram comments yesterday (5/3) that something else would be released on May 10. Stay tuned.

Pecknold spoke about the making of Crack-Up in an interview with Julia Cunningham and Kyle Anderson on Entertainment Weekly Radio’s show LA Daily. Turns out the album’s title refers more to losing ones mind than to laughing; Pecknold saw a collection of F. Scott Fitzgerald essays by the same title, and chose it for the album title. Going to a Joanna Newsom concert helped kickstart the recording of Crack-Up, and Pecknold added it wound up being the most fun album to make of Fleet Foxes’ discography so far. He also discussed this album’s connection to Japan, and the literal continuity between Helplessness Blues and Crack-Up. He even admitted, “I think I’m too active on Instagram.” Stream the full interview below.

Speaking of being too active on Instagram, Pecknold used an app to determine who liked and commented on his Instagram posts the most, and rewarded them with signed test pressings of the Crack-Up LPs.

“You all are the 20 most frequent commenters on this page, and you’ve been really funny / kind / supportive through this whole process of writing, recording, and now releasing Crack-Up. As a way of expressing my gratitude for that, we’ve made 20 test pressings of the Crack-Up 2x vinyl LP and all signed them; we’d like to send one your way around release week. This is the only way anyone anywhere could get this particular thing. So: DM me some physical addresses and thank you again ya lovable freaks and thank you to everybody else who checks in here as well – love you all! (via)

He also used Instagram to arrange a listening session for 20 fans:

If you’re free the afternoon of this Sunday the 7th, can make it to downtown LA, and want to listen to ‘Crack-Up’ in full, DM me and I’ll send you the details and put your name on the list. Limited to 20 ppl (via)

Fleet Foxes’ tour kicks off later this month with some intimate Pacific Northwest shows. They also play a pair of BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival shows August 1 & 2 in Prospect Park. Night 1 is sold out, but tickets are still on sale for night 2. Other notable shows for Fleet Foxes are July 29 at Merriweather Post Pavilion with Animal Collective (tickets) and September 23 at Hollywood Bowl with Beach House (tickets). They also play some festivals, like Newport Folk Festival and Outside Lands. See below for a full list of Fleet Foxes’ upcoming tour dates.
