former Let's Wrestle frontman Wesley Gonzalez releases debut solo single (listen)

For ten years Wesley Gonzalez fronted indie rock trio Let’s Wrestle. (I won’t lie to you: I was a fan.) The band called it quits last year and Gonzalez went solo, and is releasing his debut solo single this week via Moshi Moshi. The A-side is “I Spoke to Euan,” and the Euan in question is Euan Hinshelwood of Younghusband who plays in Wes’ band. He elaborates:

We had travelled for a whole day getting to where we were staying after playing Primavera; I was overexcited, drinking a lot and smoking a lot. I think I found it hard to completely ease into it. I went to sleep and had a nightmare that woke me up crying uncontrollably, not really understanding why…I think a lot about how I struggle letting my mind get into a place where I can be relaxed or how I put myself under pressure in a leisurely environment.

While Gonzalez’s observational lyrical style will be familiar to any Let’s Wrestle fan, musically the new single is very different, free of shambly guitars, with synthesizers now entering the fold. In addition to Hinshelwood, his new band also features Younghusband’s rhythm section, as well as Rose Elinor Dougall (Pipettes, Innerspace Orchestra).

The flip of “I Spoke to Euan” is “Come Through and See Me” and the video was filmed in the English holiday seaside town of Blackpool, and includes a visit to a creepy wax museum (is there any other kind?). Watch that below.
