Fujiya & Miyagi have gotten a lot of mileage out a their very specific style, which mixes electronic dance music, motorik krautrock a la Neu! and frontman David Best's distinctive, hushed vocal style. It's still in fine form on Flashback, the band's eighth album, as you can hear on the slinky, minimal funk of "Personal Space," that is inviting while trying to keep us at arm's length. "'Personal Space' was born in a restaurant in Taipei, Taiwan," says Best. "Being left handed means you are often encroached upon when eating. The idea was then expanded to include the way technology intrudes into our lives. The song suggests reverting back to a simpler frame of mind, where you can take a breath and appreciate the good things you have, rather then longing for what you haven’t." The song premieres in this post and you can listen, and watch the video for Flashback's title track, below.
