Gabriel Kahane playing Central Park w/ The Knights ++ shows at Rockwood, with Andrew Bird & more
It’s hard to pigeonhole Gabriel Kahane; the Brooklyn musician straddles the line between “singer-songwriter” and “composer.”
On the one hand, Kahane has recorded albums in the vein of Sufjan Stevens or Joshua Michael Tillman — folk-inflected pop and rock that is intelligently arranged and produced. On the other, he has penned “classical” works for chamber ensembles and solo piano, including his 2005 song cycle Craigslistlieder. – [San Francisco Classical Voice]
Saying composer/songwriter Gabriel Kahane has been keeping busy lately is an understatement. He’ll perform as vocalist with NYC-based orchestra The Knights Tuesday (7/12) at Naumburg Bandshell in Central Park as part of its free 2016 Summer Concert Series. They’ll perform the world premiere of a work by Gabriel as well as music by Franz Joseph Haydn, Bob Dylan, Franz Schubert, Bob Haggart, and Ray Bauduc. The Knights also have another performance on July 19 without Gabriel, where they’ll perform works by Bartók, Busoni, Dvořák, Strauss, Haïdouks, and more. Gabriel is also touring in support of his new album The Ambassador, including some dates opening for Andrew Bird. During his tour, he’ll play four monthly residency shows at Rockwood Music Hall on July 24, August 28, September 25, and October 23. Tickets for those shows are on sale now.
