Girl Ray prep debut LP 'Earl Grey' (watch the "Preacher" video)

Girl Ray Preacher video still 11

UK group Girl Ray, who have put out a promising string of singles, will release their debut album, Earl Grey, on August 4 via Moshi Moshi. Their new single is “Preacher,” an understated song that builds momentum as it goes, and perhaps owes just a little to to the anorak pop of The Pastels (though this is not what you’d call “shambolic” at all). The video for the song, which premieres in this post, is part two of “Nettles of the Parish,” a short-form period drama which the band created with director Alex Cantouris. (It started with their video for “Stupid Things.”) Girl Ray’s Iris McConnell tells us, “It follows the story of a lowly servant (played by professional actor Michael O’Malley) who succumbs to his deepest desires, losing everything in the process. Get out ur Kleenex! We didn’t intend for it to be this moving, our apologies.”

Adds director Cantouris, “Condensing an entire period drama with all its twists and turns into a three minute video was a real challenge, and I learned a whole lot. I have so much respect for the band for coming up with such a bold idea – and I’m sure the fans will enjoy the nail-biting tension of the video as the plot unfolds.” Watch the upstairs/downstairs world of “Preacher” and “Stupid Things” (aka Nettles of the Parish Pts 1 & 2) below.
