Gone is Gone announce debut LP, share “Sentient”; Mastodon recording new album

The Mastodon/Queens of the Stone Age/At the Drive In supergroup Gone is Gone are getting ready to release their debut album after releasing an EP earlier this year. The new LP is called Echolocation, and it's due out on January 6. They shared the first song from that today, a slow-burning track called "Sentient."

It's an interesting, dramatic song that seems like a change from, but still an extension of, their work from the self-titled EP. All three bands with members here have played with different shades of hard rock accessibility in an era which isn't all that friendly to such sounds. This feels like territory that none of these bands, somehow, have ever covered. A loud-quiet-loud ballad with shades of post-metal and grunge, the band is going for pretty and haunting and a little goth, and it mostly gets there. You can listen to that below.

Meanwhile, Mastodon (who's bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders fills those same duties here) have entered the studio to start work on their new album (which guitarist Brent Hinds has suggested might end up a double album). Troy talked about it in an interview with the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

But, we have a new spot that we are going to hole up in for the month of October. Basically, we are going to play this Pabst Oct. 1, then the next day we being recording and we will be holed up at an Atlanta studio for the month of October. We’re excited because we’ve done lots of touring over the past few years. It’s that refreshing cycle of write, record, tour, tour, tour, take a break, write, record, tour, tour, tour. This is one of the many healthy transitions that we do as a band to keep our momentum going. We’re excited about recording because we haven’t recorded a record in over two years. Positive vibes are in the house.

Just one more thing to get excited about.
