With the coronavirus outbreak causing many people to stay at home as much as possible, we’ve been asking musicians what music they’re listening to in isolation, and this one comes from Mick Ford, guitarist of Gouge Away, whose tour with Circa Survive was one of the many tours affected by COVID-19.

Mick's playlist leans heavily on the atmospheric, ethereal side, with a lot of post-rock, electronic, and ambient music as well as some indie rock that fits the vibe. Artists he picked include Duster, Boards of Canada, Guided by Voices, Hiroshi Yoshimura, Bowery Electric, Sweet Trip, Stephen Malkmus, and more. Listen to his playlist and read commentary on each pick below...

Acetone - "All The Time"

I've been listening to a lot of this band lately. Very chill. They know how to get twangy without being too country. This song in particular is about wishing someone was around and you knew what was going to happen. There's a lot of friends I haven't seen seen during the isolation so it's nice to share that sentiment.

Bowery Electric - "Empty Words"

Beat is one of my all time favourites. Definitely some comfort food. It's the intersection between shoegaze and trip hop. With this spare time I've been delving into the internet to find live videos and I happened to find a single one. Highly recommended.

Duster - "Summer War"

There's a strange air before a hurricane is going to hit. The COVID crisis is a very similar feeling. Florida is always sunny and summer. This song is that strangeness.

Boards Of Canada - "Turquoise Hexagon Sun"

Since i've been stuck inside I've been listening to a lot of Boards Of Canada's early compilation "Boc Maxima". Very good collection of songs that are spread across their early releases.

Guided By Voices - "Privately"

Privately is the last track on the aptly names "Isolation Drills." The lyrics almost feel like they could be about the current situation. Uncle Bob always has a song for any situation.

Hiroshi Yoshimura - "Green"

Light In The Attics just announced a reissue of this ambient gem. I don't think I could get through this time without this record. Actual bliss.

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - "Asking Price"

I've been watching a lot of YouTube since i've had so much time at home. The algorithm decided I should watch an infinite amount of Stephen Malkmus interviews and live sets. So here we are with a track about indecision and boredom.

Ross From Friends - "Talk To Me You'll Understand"

I love this song. On tour I listen to it to zone all the time. It's so relaxing but has an amazing hook. The hi-hats a bit before the halfway mark are so heavy. It makes me want to dance!

VAPERROR - "Super Megaenergizing Powerup"

New Vaperror LP came out right as the quarantine was starting. I've been getting to sit with it and have been thoroughly enjoying.

FM Skyline - "Marble Madness"

Another new 100% Electronica release. Love FM's last LP and loving this new single.

Sweet Trip - "Velocity: Design Comfort."

Darla recently announced a first vinyl pressing of this and I instantly ordered it. Sweet Trip dabbles in shoegaze, electronica, ambient and dream pop. This track in particular sounds like drum and bass Stereolab. Thats a ticket for success if you ask me.
