The Mermaid Parade wasn't the only thing going on at Coney Island on Saturday (6/18), it was also the Burger Beach Bash, the first big NYC fest from the party animals at Burger Records who throw lots of them in California. While there weren't that many of the denim-clad bands with which Burger is synonymous (like Together PANGEA, or The Growlers), it was a stacked and varied lineup at MCU Park with the rides of Astroland as its backdrop, and a $15 admission that was what you'd pay for two drinks in the stadium at a Cyclones game.

There was Toronto's Fucked Up, with Damien Abraham going into the crowd as usual; metal vets Pentagram; and the in-your-face party stance of Andrew WK. There was also the tongue-in-cheek R&B jams of Har Mar Superstar, the jazzy pop of Mr. Twin Sister; with wimp-pop legends Milk N' Cookies, and rising Brooklyn garage rock crew The Mystery Lights both representing that Burger flavor.

Headliner GZA came out late and played a short set before he was told to get off for curfew. Before his final song he told the crowd his lateness was related to not getting paid. "It's a difficult place for an artist to be in...but it's all business."
