‘Hadestown’ coming to Broadway; Anais Mitchell touring (NYC with Will Sheff)
Anais Mitchell's great 2010 folk opera Hadestown (which features Justin Vernon, Ani DiFranco, Greg Brown, The Low Anthem‘s Ben Knox Miller, and the Haden Triplets) already got a stage adaptation for the New York Theatre Workshop in 2015/2016 and now it's coming to Broadway in 2019.
Most details (like dates and a theater) for the Broadway run are TBA, but it's also been announced that the show will first come to the National Theater in London from November 2 to January 26. It was also staged at the Citadel Theater in Edmonton, Alberta, last year. Here's more from the NY Times:
The show’s developmental journey has been somewhat unorthodox, as the team continues to experiment with the physical production. But, as the competition for space at Broadway theaters intensifies, a number of shows are having multiple productions before landing, including “Come From Away,” which was presented in San Diego, Seattle, Washington and Toronto before New York.
Ms. Mitchell, a singer-songwriter, has constructed a folk-and-jazz score that not only retells [the Orpheus and Eurydice myth], but also frames it as a commentary on contemporary economics and politics. The show has not announced a cast for London, but each previous cast was led by Patrick Page as Hades and Amber Gray as Persephone; the cast in Canada featured Reeve Carney as Orpheus and T. V. Carpio as Eurydice.
Stay tuned for more.
Anais Mitchell also has a few upcoming shows, including two in the NYC-area. She plays Montclair, NJ's Outpost In the Burbs on May 4 with Robinson & Rohe (tickets), and she also plays Wesley Stace's Cabinet of Wonders on May 9 at City Winery NYC with an incredible lineup of Bird of Youth, Dave Hill, Steve Kistulentz, Lydia Loveless, Carla Rhodes, Will Sheff of Okkervil River, and more (tickets). All of Anais' dates are listed below.
That Cabinet of Wonders show happens in the middle of Okkervil River's tour, which also includes a Will Sheff in-store at Strand and a sold-out release show at Rough Trade (win tickets). As of today, you can stream Okkervil River's new album.
