Heavy Low-Down: Mutoid Man record release, new Cynic, Carcass video & more

Let’s start by looking forward:

Some cool shows are coming up this weekend: the Converge/Cave In side project Mutoid Man, plus MANALIVE, & Summoner, will play Saint Vitus tonight (12/13). If you’re in more of a noise mood, you can catch Blue Sabbath Black Cheer, Whorid, Compactor, & Existence In Decline at Acheron. Tomorrow (12/14) at ABC No Rio, Tombs (who just finished recording the follow up to their 2011 breakthrough Path of Totality) will play an matinee with Sannhet, Windfaerer, and Barbarian. (Argonauts appears to have dropped from the bill, unfortunately.)

Black Cobra, Morbid Saint, Deceased, and Power Trip are all coming to NYC in the new year. Locals Mutilation Rites also announced an NYC show in January with Subjugation and Sacrificial Massacre. Keep an eye on our NYC metal calendar for further updates + deets.

And now, let’s look back:

As you’ve probably noticed, we’re in full end-of-year mode both here at BV and over at Invisible Oranges — we ran best-albums posts by IO contributors Greg Majewski, Chris Rowella, Rhys Williams, Dan Lawrence, and Ian Chainey. We also reviewed our seven best live photos of the year and had some horrifying fun watching the ten worst metal vids of the year (they’re really, really bad).

In between, we found time to debut some new Iron Reagan music (who are also gonna be in town soon) and speak with the elusive sole member of The Ruins of Beverast. And, as ever, we ran down all the new metal releases fit to buy.

Some other miscellaneous items:

Cynic released the first single from their upcoming album. It’s, um, very cheery. Carcass also released a music video for “Unfit For Human Consumption” off Surgical Steel, which frontman Jeff Walker carries largely with his deadpan lip-syncing. And Slayer‘s lengthy relationship with Rick Rubin is looking shaky.
