Hector Xtravaganza, ball icon and 'Pose' consultant, RIP

Hector Xtravaganza, “Grandfather” of House of Xtravaganza and icon of NYC’s Ballroom culture, passed away at age 60. The sad news was shared on December 30 by House of Extravaganza:

It is with profound sadness the House of Xtravaganza family announce the passing of our beloved Grandfather Hector. He was a friend to everyone he met, a source of inspiration for all who knew him, and a cornerstone of our House family. Arrangements for a celebration of Hector’s life will be shared in the coming days.

Born Hector Crespo, he legally changed his name to Xtravaganza and was House Father from 1993-1997 and 1999-2003, when he then became House Grandfather. Hector was also a consultant on FX’s terrific series Pose which is set in the NYC Ballroom world of the late ’80s.  Pose co-creator Steven Canals and writer/producer Lady J both paid tribute on Twitter and you can read those, along with a few other tributes, below.

Rest in peace, Hector.

House of Xtravaganza, which is still going strong, was featured in the great 1990 ballroom documentary Paris is Burning which you can watch on Netflix.
