With the coronavirus outbreak causing many people to stay at home as often as possible, we’ve been asking musicians what music they’re listening to in isolation, and this playlist comes from Birds in Row bassist Quentin Sauve, whose debut solo album Whatever It Takes dropped last year, with physical copies out this Friday (3/27) via Deathwish.

Quentin picked songs from Big Thief, Pedro the Lion, Phoebe Bridgers, Stella Donnelly, Daughters, and more, with commentary on each track. Listen to it here and keep scrolling to read his list...

Douglas Dare - “I Am Free”
I’ll start with this one. I’ve been a big fan of Douglas Dare since 2014. His new album just came out and this song gives me hope. I hope we’ll be - or at least “feel” - free soon. While I’m writing this, It actually makes me think of this next one:

Anthony and the Johnsons - “Hope There’s Someone”
From a 2005 album. This is the kind of album I listen for 12 years and I know I’ll always listen to it, when I need it. It starts with “Hope there's someone who'll take care of me - when I die - Hope there's someone who'll set my heart free”. Makes me nostalgic to re-listen to it. Just realized I needed it now!

Pedro The Lion - “Quietest Friend”
So yeah I’m a very nostalgic person, and I really like this song for that. “Nothing last forever, now I understand”. His voice gives me chills every time in this chorus. We listened to it often during my first US solo tour last year with Listener and Birds In Row.

Julia Jacklin - “Don’t Know How To Keep Loving You”
Still in the nostalgia feeling, I really love this song. I think it’s a song that could have been composed a long time ago, like in the 70's. It has a Neil Young vibe. I like playing it loud and dancing alone on it.

Stella Donnelly - “Old Man”
Here is another Australian singer that I love. This makes me dance as well, in a happier way. The whole album is so good. I love the lyrics.

Soja Triani - “Le Future”
A bit of French here. This is the new project of my friend Tom (he used to play with me in my previous solo project “Throw Me Off The Bridge”) and my brother Amaury (who I recorded my album with). It speaks about the uncertainties of the future. Pretty relevant now. Their EP is really good and interesting in so many ways.

Daughters - “Satan In The Wait”
I don’t really listen to "heavy" music anymore, but this album is crazy. The lyrics, the sound design, the whole atmosphere… it’s really something. I can’t say it feels good to listen to it, but it feels heavy for sure. The intro of the album describes well what you see when you look through your window right now : “This city is an empty glass - Words do not hear - Graciousness is lost - Shops are closed - There is nothing to…” And so this song is my favorite. “This world is opening up”.

Hayley Williams - “Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris”
As a Paramore fan, I was curious to check out the new solo project of the singer. This song just came out and makes me feel good, watching the streets through windows but thinking of being in a garden full of flowers (plus, Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers are on backing vocals).

Phoebe Bridgers - “Garden Song”
Speaking of gardens and Phoebe Bridgers, here is her brand new song, pretty cool too!

Big Thief - “Not”
And finally I wanted to put this one. Big Thief is the best live I’ve seen last year. They played this one before it was released. I like how this song is growing slowly, repetitively, until rage explodes. It’s really interesting how it’s focused on what’s not, instead of what actually is.
