High on Fire / Pallbearer @ Music Hall of Williamsburg - 8/18/15
High on Fire are one of those bands who never really change their sound much, but never really have to either. If you needed proof of that (which you probably don't), more than half of the 15-year-old band's songs at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Tuesday (8/18) were less than two months old, and the crowd's excitement didn't die down once. Matt Pike took the stage (shirtless, obviously) with no more than a "We're High on Fire, motherfuckers" and went right into "The Black Plot," the killer opener off the new album. Whether it was that song and the others off Luminiferous or an oldie like "10,000 Years," they were as pulverizing and as downright fun as you could ask for.
Direct support came doom greats Pallbearer, who gave us "Worlds Apart" and "The Ghost I Used To Be" off last year's fantastic Foundations of Burden and "Devoid of Redemption" and "Foreigner" off its also-excellent predecessor, Sorrow & Extinction. Unlike High on Fire, Pallbearer aren't always a fun band live, but maybe this tour has had an effect on them because Tuesday's show might be the most energized I've seen them yet. They crushed, and that 40 minute set flew by like nothing.
Opening was Lucifer, the new band of The Oath's Johanna Sadonis, whose catchy trad-doom sounded pretty solid. Before them was Venomous Maximus, who I unfortunately missed but our photographer didn't. Pictures of the whole show are in this post.
This show and the tour's other NYC stop (Irving Plaza on 10/15) were co-presented by BrooklynVegan and Invisible Oranges. Check out pictures of the Irving show HERE, and more pictures and HoF's setlist from MHOW, below...
