High on Fire / Windhand @ Saint Vitus - 1/9/15
-And now: High On Fire from Oakland, CA.
-Sounds like: Taking a bong hit right before a Marshall Amp is literally thrown at your face.
-New features on Matt Pike: A Lemmy-esque handlebar mustache.
-Things I would do to see High On Fire play a straight set of Motörhead songs: Kill, cheat, lie, sell the farm, sell government secrets, cut off a section of a pinky.
-Prediction: At some point, Lemmy will walk into his dressing room, and Matt Pike will emerge in Lemmy's signature black outfit and cowboy hat. He will answer only to "Lemmy." Matt Pike will become the new Lemmy, and will continue the reign of Motörhead.
-Highlight tracks of the night: "Rumors of War," "Madness Of An Architect," and "Speedwolf."
-New tracks played: All I can clearly remember is that one is called "Carcosa," which is an awesome True Detective/Robert Chambers reference, and that song slayed. [Chris Krovatin for Revolver]
The awesome double bill of sludge beasts High on Fire and doom traditionalists Windhand wrapped up their tour in Providence last night, after hitting NYC for two shows (early and late) at Saint Vitus on January 9. We caught the late show, which was totally packed (both were sold out). High on Fire have a new album on the way (they're about to enter the studio with Kurt Ballou), and offered several new songs from that at the show. Opening the show (and the whole tour) was instrumental New Orleans band Mountain of Wizard. The review quoted above is of the early show. Pictures of the late one are in this post.
In related news, Windhand singer Dorthia Cottrell has a psych-folk solo album on the way via Forcefield Records (due 3/3). She just released another track from that album, "Kneeler." Check it out, with more pictures and videos from Vitus, below.
