Holy Tongues (ex-Ruiner) releasing debut LP (stream 2 songs)

by Andrew Sacher

Holy Tongues

One of the staples of ’00s hardcore was Baltimore’s Ruiner, and though they’re sadly broken up, the members have continued on. One former member is now in Old Lines and three others are in the band Holy Tongues. Their debut album, Weak People, comes out on August 5 via Melotov Records (Tiger Flowers, ACxDC), with production by Kevin Bernsten (Full of Hell, Magrudergrind). We’ve got the premiere of the album’s new single, “Filters,” which sees Holy Tongues moving past Ruiner’s melodic hardcore into slower realms of post-hardcore with aggressive, Albini-indebted sludge bass and shoutier vocals. Stream that, with previous single “92,” a dose of sludge punk that wouldn’t feel out of place on Sub Pop’s late ’80s roster, below.

Holy Tongues will celebrate the new LP on August 9 in their hometown of Baltimore, and they’ll be in NYC a day after for a show at The Flat (8/10). More bands and details TBA.
