Hot Snakes played an intense Bowery Ballroom show (review, setlist)

Hot Snakes are currently touring their excellent, unbridled new record Jericho Sirens (their first in 14 years), and they brought the same energy to NYC’s Bowery Ballroom on Monday (6/4). Throughout the night, the band played many tracks off the new album, opening the show with “Death Camp Fantasy,” and later playing album highlights “Six Wave Hold-Down” and “Having Another?” The band included a bunch of older fan favorites in the mix as well, performing many songs off the band’s first two records, including “LAX” and “No Hands,” the latter of which threw much of the crowd into a frenzy.

The band seemed very comfortable and happy onstage, with vocalist/guitarist Rick Froberg and bassist Gar Wood sharing many laughs in between songs. The true rockstar of the night was guitarist John Reis, who made physical contact with several fans in the front row on numerous occasions. This included instances where Reis put his leg atop an audience member’s shoulder, or literally wrapped his guitar cable around an enthusiastic fan’s neck, thankfully with a non-deadly outcome.

The band closed the night by playing an adrenaline-fueled five-song encore, which entirely consisted of tracks from their third and most ferocious LP, Audit in Progress. The night began with performances from openers Meat Wave and Vundabar, both of whom will open for the band when they play Brooklyn’s Elsewhere Hall tonight (tickets).
