Iron Maiden annihilated Barclays Center again (night 2 pics, videos, setlist)

Iron Maiden returned to Barclays Center on Saturday night (7/27) after leveling the place a night earlier, and once again thousands of fans swarmed the Brooklyn venue — more of them wearing Iron Maiden shirts than not (like some of the band members also were) — to see one of heavy metal’s most legendary bands in action. The show is part of Maiden’s North & South American “Legacy of the Beast” tour (which supports their new video game of the same name), and as Bruce Dickinson said on stage last night, the band aren’t playing any new songs on this tour, but he promised they’d be back on our shores “with a whole bunch of new songs,” so it seems a new Iron Maiden album is brewing. Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, it was a real treat to witness the setlist they put together for this tour, which is loaded with hits and fan favorites and pulls mostly from the band’s classic ’80s era. (It’s the same setlist every night.) They opened with “Aces High” and a fighter jet hovering above the stage, and it’s hard to think of a better way to open an Iron Maiden show than that. As Jeff wrote in his review of night one, the show started at a 10/10 and it stayed on that level all night, with epic stage props and visuals, endless costume changes for Bruce Dickinson, hit after hit, and never a dull moment. Another thing Jeff wrote in his night one review that I couldn’t agree with more: it is truly wild to watch these guys — all in their 60s — running around the stage with more energy and enthusiasm than plenty of bands half their age. And the theatrics are all matched by an absurdly professional level of musicianship. Bruce’s wail hasn’t been tarnished one bit over the years, and every guitar solo was as face-melting as they are on the old records. Add in the fact that they’ve got exactly the same lineup they had from 1983’s Piece of Mind through 1988’s Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, plus the extremely athletic guitarist Janick Gers who’s been with them for 30 years, and you’ve got yourself a band of true lifers like few others.
