"I just converted my NY state tax return into tickets to Stars, The Black Keys, Vampire Weekend, Jonsi, and Plants & Animals #boom" -wonderboymusic

Record Store Day

Saturday is Record Store Day (and depending on your tax return, that's extra good or extra bad timing). There's quite a bit going on in NYC, and elsewhere too. Around the country there are envy-wothy shows - Miami has No Age; Amoeba in San Francisco gets Jonsi, Yeasayer (DJ) and Charlotte Gainsbourg (signing); L.A. gets Lou Barlow + The Missingmen, Dum Dum Girls and Male Bonding (as well as Smashing Pumpkins); Yo La Tengo plays Claremont, California; and, awesomely, Alice in Chains perform in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

Oh, the picture above? "Chunklet's affectionate contribution to Record Store Day." But we were saying...

NYC has plenty of in-stores. There's shows from the Drums and the Pains of Being Pure at Heart at Other Music (updated schedule below). And Cymbals Eat Guitars, Black Wine, The Budos Band and DJ Andrew WK at Generation Records (updated schedule below). And Duck Down artists at Fat Beats. And Mystery of the Two at Permanent Records.

Other NYC in-stores include Kenny White, ZO2, Jason Derulo, The New Boyz, Harry Spero & His Fabulous Friends at J&R; and R&B and hip-hop at Basement Mix Records in East New York (Brooklyn - map) from "D-Woods Formerly Of Danity Kane/Young Money" and others, with a slew of DJs all day.

Not too far outside of NYC, Freelance Whales, Peter Bradley Adams and Care Bears on Fire start at noon at Vintage Vinyl in Fords, NJ (map).

Did we miss any? Record Store Day's site also has a list which includes in-stores all over the country. A full list of participating NY stores is here. That's the list where you'll find every location you can buy collectible vinyl that bands and labels are producing just for this young holiday.

RSD-exclusive discs include Crystal Castles, Fela and lots of the music in between (Pavement and Ted Leo being two). Fucked Up will have a whole series of variable artwork 7"s dedicated to different record stores (including NYC's Generation). Others are: Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs doing Dark Side of the Moon on seafoam green vinyl; Hold Steady's Heaven is Whenever (early) on hand-screenprinted vinyl; and Peter Gabriel swapping cover songs with Stephin Merritt and Bon Iver on separate split 7"s. All (or most) of the Record Store Day exclusives are listed here.

Each store will have slightly different items though, and each will run out of the good stuff at slightly varying rates, so it's a gamble. Vintage Vinyl has a big list of what they'll be selling. Sound Fix, who won't have entertainment, also made a list of records. That list, the Other Music & Generation Records schedules with I Need That Record!, a doc on the decline of record stores (aka why they needs their own holiday), which is streaming on Pitchfork TV this week, and more, below...
