UPDATE: The Weeknd is now back on The Meadows lineup; he plays at 6:15 PM and will then head into the city to perform on the SNL season premiere later that night.

The Weeknd was supposed to headline day one (10/1) of inaugural Queens festival The Meadows, but he had to drop off "due to unforeseen scheduling conflicts" and he was replaced by J. Cole. (Kind of a downgrade if you prefer R&B-pop bliss to dorky self-serious rap, but hey I guess Cole is popular.) Otherwise, the fest goes on as planed with Kanye West, Chance the Rapper, Grimes, and more.

This comes less than a day after The Weeknd announced his new album, Starboy, and released its Daft Punk-featuring title track. It's a cool song, which makes his cancellation an even bigger bummer. The album drops November 25. Listen to "Starboy" now:

In related news, we were wondering if The Avalanches would play The Meadows, but then they had to cancel tour dates due to health issues and now we may never know if they were in fact booked. Meanwhile, they did just tease a trip to the US for 2017:

We're watching out!
