Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton, who passed away in 2009, would be turning 70 on July 17, and that day, in his former hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan, a very impressive cast of musicians will pay tribute to him. Those musicians include Minutemen member (and Ron’s former Stooges bandmate) Mike Watt, Dinosaur Jr’s J Mascis (who has played with Ron Asheton several times and also has a Stooges cover band and has played Stooges covers with Mike Watt), Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, Mudhoney’s Mark Arm (who has also done a Stooges tribute band), Royal Trux’s Jennifer Herrema, Hot Snakes’ Mario Rubalcaba, and Gumball’s Don Fleming. Tickets are on sale now.

In other recent Stooges news, earlier this week, Iggy Pop called Mitski “probably the most advanced American songwriter I know.”
